REGULATORY

PIN flame retardants are designed to ensure the respect of regulations applicable to chemicals, in particular:

REACH:

The European Chemical Regulation

Classification and Labelling

Under REACH, full information concerning all chemicals produced or imported by any company at > 100 tonnes/year are now published on the ECHA public (European Chemical Agency) website. By June 2018, all chemicals down to 1 tonne production per year have to be registered in Europe and regulatory dossier information submitted. Regulations, driven by environmental and health safety objectives, are increasingly limiting the use of halogenated flame retardants and so inciting industry to develop alternative PIN fire safety solutions:

REACH:

  • proposals to restrict DecaBDE (Authorisation procedure)

  • consideration in the evaluation process (CORAP) of short and medium chain chlorinated paraffins, decabromodiphenyl ethane, PBDEs

  • consideration in this evaluation process of two phosphorus FRs: TPP Triphenyl phosphate and TMP Tris(methylphenyl)  phosphate.

  • UNEP POP (Persistent Organic Pollutants) Stockholm Convention: listing of PBBs, certain PBDEs, consideration of HBCD

  • EU WEEE Directive (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment): requires separative collection and treatment of polymers containing brominated flame retardants

  • EU Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive: bans on PBBs, PBDEs, DecaBDE
